Our Stewardship Parish
St. Philip Neri existed as a mission since 1889. The parish was named "Blessed Trinity" in 1922. The parish elementary school was started in 1928. The parish was always been highly respected for its outreach to the poor and for its excellent Catholic grade school.
In 1991, the subsidy from the parish to the school was $120,000 per year. A dispute over the magnitude of this subsidy arose at a Parish Council meeting. One member had heard of the "Wichita Stewardship Story" and further investigation into the Stewardship Way of Life ensued.
Fr. Pat and our deacon at the time, Vernon Krajeski, spent three days at St. Francis in Wichita and, under the wise direction of Fr. Tom McGread, gained insight into the total Stewardship Way of Life as preached and lived at St. Francis. They learned that any parish that was centered on the Eucharist, had a good outreach ministry beyond itself and cultivated hospitality was bound to be successful in the Stewardship Way of Life.
To help implement the Stewardship Way of Life at Blessed Trinity, six couples were selected to form a Stewardship Commission. The three-fold purpose of this commission was, and still is, to; prepare for carrying out the Annual Parish Stewardship Renewal in November, to facilitate ongoing and continuous Stewardship education, and to annual evaluate the parish and its ministries.
At the first annual presentation presentation to the parish community, the stewardship commission pledged the following to the Parish:
- To begin Perpetual Adoration as soon as possible.
- To never again pass the baskets a second time at Mass - all causes would go into the first and only collection.
- To respect the meditation time after Communion.
- The Parish would begin tithing by offering 10% of the weekely collection to various charities.
- All ministries of the Parish, including Catholic education, would be made free for all families who were committed to the Stewardship Way of Life. The Stewardship Commitment for each family includes, worshipping at Mass as a family each weekend, committing time and talent to Parish Ministries, and tithing 10% of each family's gross family income - 8% goes to the Parish and 2% go to the charities of teh family's choice.
This Stewardship Way of Life called for a number of changes - but most notably was a revamping of the Parish Council. All parish ministries were grouped under six Commissions and each Commission would send one representative to sit on the Parish Council for 3 to 6 years. The Hispanic community would also send one representative to the Council. Additionally, three at-large members would be included. Members of the Parish Council are selected and voted in by the parish community
Each year, Blessed Trinity sends a group of people to the annual International Catholic Stewardship Conference. In 2006, Blessed Trinity was awarded the Archibishop Thomas J. Murphy Award. The award is given by the International Catholic Stewardship Council to a parish for its outstanding and ongoing effort to promote the stewardship way of life.
The success of the Stewardship Way of Life in our Parish is due to our pastoral leadership, the work of the Stewardship Commission, and the support of the parish community.
